and Safety Research organise a strategic workshop on Environment and Transport in different contexts on October 27-28, 2008.

Objectives and scope
This first conference deals with the environment issues related to transport in different areas with a particular focus on the South countries. It will be aimed at emerging a discussion forum for researchers from different backgrounds, at capitalizing the best practice and sharing North-South and South-South experiences, at contributing to a State of the art of the scientific knowledge in South countries, at initiating research topics towards solutions adapted to specific situations in developing countries, at making available tools for policy makers and managers of environment to help for making decision.

The main topics to be dealt with are:

• Transportation system and environmental impacts: vehicle fleet, traffic and mobility, infrastructures, emission (road, rail, aviation, maritime).
• Impact of transportation on population and ecosystem: greenhouse, air pollution, health effect, noise, water pollution, landscape, waste, fauna, flora.
• Evaluation methodology of environmental sustainability: modelling of impacts, environmental indicators, decision-making tools, external costs.
• Technology control: fuels, vehicle technologies, urban transport management, public transportation system, vehicles inspection and maintenance.
• Transportation policy: environmental policy, policy and legislation of mobility (people and goods), transport demand control, search for sustainable scenarios.

Call for papers
Papers will be presented orally or as posters.
Prospective authors should send their abstracts by email to the chairman of the Scientific Committee (joumard@inrets.fr) not later than 31 January 2008. The abstract should include the title, author's names, addresses and affiliation, a summary of the paper in 300-500 words, as well as a list of five to ten key words. The body of the abstract should include the following three sections: 1) statement of objectives, 2) method of approach, and 3) results and conclusions.
Full length manuscript of accepted papers by the Scientific Committee should be submitted by July 31, 2008 for the proceedings.

Official languages
French and English are the two symposium languages. Interpreting services will be provided from French into English and from English into French.

Location
The symposium will be held in the city of Ghardaïa located in the North of the Algerian Sahara. Ghardaïa is considered as the gate of the desert and is well known for its specific architecture, its palm grove and the mozabite culture. It is a source of inspiration for many architects and town planners.

Registration
Registration fees for participants have been set at 250 € for OECD participants, and at 150 € for others. It includes:

- accommodation and meals
